For foreign law firms instructing counsel in India

Updated October 2026

Foreign lawyers cannot appear before Indian courts and tribunals, so cross-border disputes with an Indian leg need Indian counsel. I take instructions from foreign law firms and in-house teams, and work alongside them, on the Indian side of their matters in Delhi: the Supreme Court, the Delhi High Court, NCLT, NCLAT and the district courts.

Where I can help

  • Arbitrations and contentious proceedings before courts and tribunals in Delhi.
  • Enforcing foreign-seated arbitral awards against Indian parties, and resisting enforcement.
  • Interim relief in India in aid of foreign-seated arbitrations: asset preservation, injunctions, securing amounts in dispute.
  • Executing foreign judgments, or suing on them where the forum is not a reciprocating territory.
  • Recovery and insolvency strategy against Indian debtors, including filings before NCLT.
  • Shareholder and joint-venture disputes involving Indian companies.
  • Indian-law expert opinions and advice on Indian procedure for proceedings abroad.

How an instruction works

  1. Conflict check. Send the parties’ names; I confirm conflicts within one working day.
  2. Preliminary view. After reviewing the key documents, I give a short written note on the Indian forum, the steps, the likely timeline and the main risks.
  3. Engagement. An engagement letter with your firm or your client, as you prefer. Fees are agreed in advance, payable by wire.
  4. Running the matter. I draft, file and argue the Indian proceedings. You stay the client’s lead adviser, and I report through you unless you ask otherwise.
  5. Updates. A written note after every hearing, with copies of orders. Calls are scheduled to suit your time zone.
