FAQs for instructing lawyers

I take briefs from law firms, solicitors and advocates in Delhi and elsewhere, as lead counsel or alongside a senior. This page sets out where I appear, what I am briefed for and how a brief works in practice.

Where I appear

  • Supreme Court of India
  • Delhi High Court, original and appellate side
  • National Company Law Appellate Tribunal and NCLT, Delhi
  • CESTAT, Principal Bench, New Delhi
  • Central Administrative Tribunal, Principal Bench
  • Delhi district courts, including the commercial courts, and the consumer commissions

What I am briefed for

  • Arbitration, on the court side: petitions under Sections 9, 11, 34 and 36 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, appeals under Section 37, and applications under Sections 27 and 29A
  • Commercial suits under the Commercial Courts Act: plaints, written statements, injunction and summary-judgment applications, and hearings before the joint registrars and the court
  • Insolvency appeals and applications before the NCLAT and NCLT
  • Customs, excise and GST appeals before CESTAT and the Supreme Court
  • Service matters before the CAT and in writ jurisdiction
  • Special leave petitions and defence of SLPs, including caveats
  • Written opinions, notes on limitation and maintainability, and pleadings settled for filing elsewhere

Counsel outside Delhi

Firms and counsel in Chennai and other cities brief me as their Delhi counsel for the Supreme Court, the NCLAT, CESTAT and the CAT. I file, mention, appear and send a note the same day. The client relationship stays with the instructing counsel; I do not take the client on directly.

How to brief me

  1. Email the brief to abhinav@ahansaraman.in with the parties’ names, the forum and the date, if listed. A conflict check comes back the same day.
  2. Send the pleadings, the orders and a short chronology. A line on what you want from the hearing or the note is more useful than a long covering letter.
  3. Fees are agreed in writing before work starts, per appearance or per drafting task. Court fees, filing charges and travel are billed at cost.
  4. After each hearing you receive a note the same day: what happened, what the court said, what is due and when.

Urgent matters

For mentioning, caveats and urgent listing, call +91 89037 84007. Filing and e-filing for the Supreme Court, the Delhi High Court, the NCLAT, CESTAT and the CAT is handled from my chambers.

Representative work is listed on the Representative Matters page. Clients are not identified there and outcomes are not described.
